Learn to Cook the Sicilian Way

By: Silversea
With Silversea’s carefully planned optional shore tours, travellers can fully immerse themselves in local culture and cuisine. One of our most popular excursions is the “Sicilian Market & Cooking Class – Cucina del Sole” offered in Taormina.</P>

This fun and entertaining adventure takes you into the heart of Sicilian culture with a scenic drive to Catania and a visit to one of the island’s colourful markets to get your first look at the array of fresh vegetables, fruits and fish that are typical of Sicilian cuisine.

Then it’s off to the slopes of Mount Etna and the small village of Viagrande for a hands-on cooking class and lunch at the 18th-century home of award-winning food journalist Eleonora Consoli.

If you’re a foodie at heart, you’ll be pleased to know several Silversea Mediterranean voyages in 2012 offer the chance to learn more about Sicily and its cuisine from the port of Taormina. Here’s a small selection:

  • Voyage 2210: Silver Wind, Barcelona to Rome, 17 – 27 April
  • Voyage 2212: Silver Wind, Rome to Venice , 30 April – 7 May
  • Voyage 5211: Silver Spirit, Lisbon to Monte Carlo, 26 April – 5 May

Look at New Entertainment with Silversea Cruises

By: Silversea

Our totally revamped entertainment programme, created exclusively for Silversea by Choozi Entertainment. The programme will also be rolled out to Silver Spirit in March 2012.

In a move away from traditional production shows, the new concert-style concept features an outstanding cast of classically trained vocalists and musicians performing a lively celebration of music from Motown to opera to pop and rock. The star-studded cast and production team are headed by visionary director and choreographer Christopher Childers and his sister, Suzanne Childers.

The new shows feature a unique blend of music that follows the decades and offers Silversea guests distinct choices in their entertainment options. Here’s a snapshot of the shows and their venues:

  • SHOW LOUNGE
    • Signed, Sealed, Delivered — A musical journey through Motown’s prolific songbook. Capturing the essence of this musical genre, the cast recreates the iconic choreography with a contemporary feel, taking the audience back to a time when America captured the world’s imagination with this fabulous music.
    • High C’s — Classical music and well-known arias take the stage to enchant and delight. From Puccini to Verdi to the most popular songwriters of today, Hi C’s takes the classics and gives them a fresh twist, in the same manner as Il Divo, Josh Groban, and Sarah Brightman.
    • Fabbalicious — The music of ABBA comes alive as the cast faithfully recreates the original sound and iconic look of the legendary ’70s Swedish pop group. Designed to get the audience on their feet, singing and dancing along with the cast, this show celebrates what is arguably the most infectious and fun music of our time.
  • POOL DECK
    • Decades — From Madonna to Lady Gaga, and almost everyone in between, this fun-filled deck party is a tongue-in-cheek look at pop music through the decades … from glam rock, to electronica, to dance pop. Famous stars come to life as costumes are pulled from a trunk and the performers become one music legend after the next.
  • PANORAMA LOUNGE
    • In addition to headlining shows, performers on each ship will showcase the songbook of different composers or musicals in intimate, club-like settings, such as the Panorama Lounge. The musical selections currently planned are Lennon and McCartney, on Silver Cloud; Boublil and Schönberg, the creators of Miss Saigon and Les Misérables, on Silver Whisper; Billy Joel’s songbook from the Tony Award-winning show Movin’ Out, on Silver Wind; and today’s newest musicals … from the West End to Broadway, on Silver Shadow.
    • Christopher Childers, who toured with Madonna, Michael Jackson and Cirque du Soleil, has assembled an impressive team to create these shows. Michael Brennan, whose Broadway credits include Avenue Q, Mamma Mia!, and The Lion King, is serving as musical director. His current role as musical director for Le Rêve at Wynn Las Vegas has allowed him to work closely with Childers, who is the artistic coordinator for Le Rêve. Scott Phillips, noted lighting designer from the mega hit Human Nature is another integral part of the creative team and Suzanne Childers has designed and fashioned the costuming inspired by haute couture.

How to Travel like a Movie Star

By: Silversea

Do you breeze through airports with the grace and style of a star like Marion Cotillard (whose films include the runaway hit movie Midnight in Paris)? How do globetrotting celebrities always manage to look so carefree and fashionable when going through the same airport hurdles and delays endured by the rest of us? Well, let’s face it, they probably have an entourage to keep them looking crisp and fabulous!

But there is a simple step you can take to make your travels smoother. Smart luxury travellers of the 21st-century are embracing the art of journeying sans baggage. If you’re still lugging your suitcases across continents, let this be your wake-up call!

Silver Shore Baggage Valet

Enhance your Silversea holiday by sending your luggage ahead of you. Our Silver Shore Baggage Valet service conveniently begins and ends at your front door, allowing your luggage to travel to the ship and back home again from many ports.

Your luggage can be picked up from your home or office and travel to many worldwide destinations, enabling you to travel with ease. Considering current airport security and baggage restrictions, Silver Shore Baggage Valet provides peace of mind before and after your journey.

For your convenience, we offer roundtrip and one-way service options. Pricing is based on the weight and number of pieces to be shipped. For most international embark ports, we require the luggage be picked up 10 to 14 business days prior to your sail date. Each piece of luggage is insured up to a maximum of US$2,000.

Thirty-day advance notice prior to sail date is recommended for this service.

Silversea Cruises Continues To Garner Top Awards And Recognition

Silver Whisper‘s Suites are the Best in the World

(Ft. Lauderdale, FL — January 26, 2006) — Silversea Cruises keeps strengthening its reputation for winning top awards and recognition from leading travel publications.According to Condé Nast Traveler, the line’s 382-guest, all-suite Silver Whisper offers the very best accommodations at sea — of any ship, large, medium or small — and the line’s entire fleet of four ultra-luxury ships is listed among the world’s top ten small ships. These achievements are revealed in the magazine’s sixth annual readers’ survey of “The Best Cruise Ships in the World,” appearing in the February 2006 issue.

In addition, Seatrade Cruise Review, a leading maritime trade publication, recently showcased the spacious bathrooms of Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper (which feature a free-standing glass shower stall as well as a full-size bathtub) in its December 2005 cover story “10 of the Best Bathrooms at Sea.”

“The fact that our ships continue to receive accolades and praise from our guests and the media is testament to our solid commitment to excellence,” said David Morris, Silversea’s senior vice president of sales for North America.”This is the second consecutive year that Silver Whisper‘s suites have been voted the best in the world. While it’s always gratifying to receive this type of recognition, you can be sure we’re not about to rest on our laurels, but will keep looking for new ways to enhance our award-winning experience.”

WORLD’S BEST SUITES BY DESIGN

The key to designing for the ultra-luxury market is space. When the deck plans for Silversea’s fleet were under development, the company understood the need to design ships that accommodated far fewer guests than most ships of the same size. The space ratios of the four ships in the fleet are about twice as high as most cruise ships and considerably more than most ships claiming to appeal to the ultra-luxury market.Space ratio is derived from taking the size of the ship (the gross registered tonnage) and dividing by the number of guests it accommodates. For example, the line’s Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper are the most spacious ships in the world with a space ratio of 74.0; that equates to 7,400 cubic feet of space per guest.

This spaciousness was achieved by enlarging standard shipboard staterooms into suites, ensuring that every guest would have a suite measuring at least 240 square feet with an ocean view.Veranda Suites aboard Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper measure 345 square feet and the largest accommodations range up to 1,435 square feet.Silversea suites are considerably larger than those of earlier ships in the ultra-luxury market and are between two and three times the size of standard cruise ship cabins.Such a high design standard required a rethinking of standard shipboard traffic and provisions flow. Silversea’s award-winning suite accommodations were an integral part of the corporate philosophy from the very earliest planning stages.

ALL OCEAN-VIEW ACCOMMODATIONS

Over 80% of Silversea’s suite accommodations feature floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open onto a private teak veranda, while other suites graciously frame the sea with a five-foot panoramic picture window.

ALL-INCLUSIVE SUITE AMENITIES

Silversea’s spacious, light-filled Veranda and Vista Suites comfortably accommodate guests in an elegant atmosphere of muted tones and rich, honey-spiced maple cabinetry. There’s a separate sitting area that includes two chairs and table for in-suite dining, plus a sofa.A refrigerator (stocked with complimentary beverages, wines and spirits, restocked daily upon request), a writing desk and television with a DVD player (plus VCR aboard Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper) complete the living area.

A luxurious queen-size bed features fluffy goose down duvets, sheets made of 100% fine Egyptian cotton (thread count 320) and a choice of pillows. The line’s standard pillow is a soft goose down and feather blend. However, guests may opt for a firmer goose down and feather pillow, or a synthetic one that’s hypoallergenic, or even a contour pillow of therapeutic foam.

Additional suite amenities include fragrant Acqua di Parma bath products (shampoo, conditioner, shower and bath gel, body lotion and soap), a large walk-in closet and full-length mirror, plush terry cotton robes and slippers, in-suite personal safe, dressing table and hair dryer, a welcoming chilled bottle of award-winning Pommery Brut Royal Champagne, 24-hour room service (with dinners served course by course) — and all gratuities included.Complimentary butler service is also provided in the Royal, Grand, Rossellini and Owner’s Suites.

Silversea Cruises is recognized as an innovator in the luxury segment, offering guests large-ship amenities aboard four intimate vessels, Silver Cloud, Silver Wind, Silver Shadow, and Silver Whisper, all designed to offer an atmosphere of conviviality and casual elegance. For the ninth year, Silversea was named “Number One” small-ship line in the 2005 “Readers’ Choice” survey conducted by Condé Nast Traveler magazine. For the sixth time, Silversea was selected “World’s Best” small-ship line in the 2004 Travel + Leisure readers’ poll.

In 2012, Silversea’s six celebrated ships will offer over 200 voyages, visiting nearly 450 destinations in more than 100 countries and seven continents.  From the majestic Chilean fjords and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia to the gilded palaces of St Petersburg and the glamour of the Riviera, Silversea will present a diverse collection of the world’s most sought-after destinations. Among the highlights are Silver Whisper’s 115-day World Cruise and eight new Silversea destinations: Santander, Spain; Porto Novo, Cape Verde; Larnaca, Cyprus; Kuwait City, Kuwait; Sihanoukville (also known as Kampong Som), Cambodia; Christiansted, St Croix; and Ireland’s Foynes and Killybegs.

Steve Tucker, Silversea’s vice president of field sales for North America, said: “The world is an amazing place, and it’s our goal to create opportunities for travellers to explore its marvels in exceptional style and comfort. Our 2012 schedule has been carefully designed to offer a broad range of travel choices, including multiple-day calls and overnight stays showcasing traditional must-see destinations, as well as journeys to remote regions that are inaccessible to mega-ships.”

WORLD CRUISE 2012

Silver Whisper will embark 6 January from Fort Lauderdale on a remarkable 115-day World Cruise that concludes in glamourous Monte Carlo. On this magnificent odyssey, her guests will visit 45 ports in 27 countries stretching from the Caribbean and South America to Africa, the Far East, Arabia and Europe. Along the way, they will enjoy 13 overnight visits and exclusive insider access to seldom seen global treasures.

SILVER CLOUD — 296 guests
2012 begins with Silver Cloud soaking up the eastern Caribbean sun with seven-, nine- and ten-day voyages. Then it’s a full day in Bermuda en route to a season in Northern Europe that extends from May through August, including exotic adventures through the cool Arctic waters of the North Cape and Russia’s remote Archangel region. Silver Cloud heads south to the warmer Mediterranean to offer a series of mostly 9-day voyages in autumn and come November, crosses the Atlantic to explore the Amazon and trace the eastern coast of South America, arriving at the end of the year at the “end of the world” in Chile.

SILVER WIND — 296 guests

Silver Wind greets the New Year with a voyage spanning from Mauritius to South Africa. After a series of ten-day roundtrip sailings from Cape Town, she’ll venture north on an exotic exploration of the vast landscapes and colourful tribal cultures of Africa’s west coast. Silver Wind’s summer calendar is filled with mostly seven- and nine-day, in-depth itineraries that span the Mediterranean from Barcelona to the Black Sea. Egypt, the Holy Land and Arabia beckon in the fall. Then following a crossing to India, Silver Wind concludes the year bound for such jewels of the Indian Ocean as Madagascar and Reunion Island.

SILVER SHADOW — 382 guests

Silver Shadow‘s 2012 is a study in contrasts — summer in Alaska, winter in Australia and New Zealand, and spring and fall in the Far East. Highlights include a special 19-day voyage from Auckland to Fremantle. In Asia you can sail to China, South Korea and Japan or explore Vietnam in depth. The beauty of Alaska is explored with mostly 7-day voyages between Seward and Vancouver. A special holiday sailing visits magical Bali and spends the year’s 365th day in the crystal blue waters of the magnificent Great Barrier Reef.

SILVER WHISPER — 382 guests

Silver Whisper opens 2012 in grand style with a World Cruise. On this epic journey, she’ll visit Brazil then explore South Africa and the fantastic Indian Ocean landscape — then head east to the marvels of the South China Sea, and west to the storied Arabian Sea and Egypt. Summer reveals Northern Europe at its best — including a series of seven-night voyages highlighting St Petersburg — before the ship arrives in Canada for autumn’s vibrant fall foliage. Silver Whisper’s globetrotting pace slows with a Panama Canal crossing and soothing Caribbean sailings through year’s end.

SILVER SPIRIT — 540 guests

Silver Spirit sails into 2012 with a 64-day grand circumnavigation of South America, featuring a Panama Canal crossing and three days in Rio de Janeiro at the height of Carnaval. Yachting havens in the deep Caribbean and a leisurely transatlantic crossing are followed by an overnight visit to Monte Carlo in May for the Grand Prix and a summer season of classic Mediterranean sojourns with a special focus on the sun-drenched isles of Greece. Silver Spirit returns to the Caribbean’s tranquil warmth for the holiday season.

PRINCE ALBERT II  – Expeditions in luxury
The 132-guest Prince Albert II expedition ship invites adventure-seeking travellers to embark on a voyage that is just as exhilarating as it is luxurious. After opening the year with a series of cruises to Antarctica, the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, March and April find the Prince Albert II exploring the tropical beauty of Central America. Spring and summer are highlighted by adventures along the western coast of Africa, Britains’ northern isles, Svalbard’s frozen Arctic landscapes and Russia’s remote Franz Joseph Land. Three West Africa voyages are scheduled before the ship heads back to Antarctica in mid-November.

These unique culinary theme cruises showcase the artistry of award-winning chefs of top dining establishments from around the world, including the internationally acclaimed chefs of Relais Châteaux, the distinguished international association of charming properties and gourmet restaurants.

Two of these famed chefs will soon team up to host one extraordinary sailing: Silver Shadow’s 30-day circumnavigation of Australia. Departing from Sydney 19 January, the ship will follow a counterclockwise course around the vast island continent before returning to Sydney on 18 February. Joining an expansive enrichment programme on this special voyage are:

George Francisco, executive chef of Jonah’s, one of Australia’s oldest and most iconic establishments and a Relais Châteaux member property, who will join the ship 19 to 25 January, Sydney to Port Douglas, to host culinary presentations; and

Mathew Macartney, executive chef of the Yarra Valley’s famed Chateau Yering and a Relais Châteaux member property. He will present cooking demonstrations on the Port Douglas-to-Darwin segment, 25 to 29 January.

On the Culinary Arts enrichment voyages, celebrity chefs will display their exceptional talents during dynamic and informative cooking demonstrations where guests can taste and learn firsthand the secrets of enticing signature dishes. These voyages also feature escorted provisioning trips to international markets (when the itinerary permits), food and wine pairings, creative regional dishes, and a five-course grand gourmet dinner. Throughout these special sailings, the featured guest chef and Silversea’s executive chef are on hand to share their culinary expertise and answer any questions.

And Emanuele Vallini, executive chef of La Carabaccia restaurant, Pisa, Italy, will showcase the slow food concept in a culinary programme for guests aboard Silver Spirit’s Voyage 5103 (a World Cruise segment), 20 January-1 February, Los Angeles to Papeete.
